This was a very fun first birthday session as you can see.  We started with some general portrait shots then onto the main event of the cake smash itself.

You never entirely know how a cake smash session is going to go.  You would think that all children when confronted with the opportunity to do whatever they like with a cake would be giddy with excitement but actually it is quite a strange new situation for some of them and they aren’t quite sure how to react.  Some little ones, including my grandson, don’t actually like getting their hands dirty.  Although his solution was to just dive into the cake with his face!

So it’s quite normal for your child to need a little encouragement as to what to do with this exciting opportunity.  If they are a little unsure, I usually get mum or dad to break into the cake at the back on their behalf so they can see the cake as well as the icing, or to give them a little to try, or eat some themselves so they realise it is actually a food in front of them etc  I have lots of methods of gently encouraging them to explore their prize.  Normally by the end of the session, they are smashing like a pro.
